:: The Executive :: A Special Farewell to Dean Anderson

Greetings from COBA!

There are some things in life that one does with mixed emotions. Writing this is one of those for me. After 35 years at USF, I am retiring in July from the College of Business Administration. It has been a very fast-paced and rewarding time for me. Beginning my career as a tenure-earning assistant professor in the college seems like yesterday. Perhaps it is so vivid in my memory because, at my very first faculty meeting, the dean, who had just signed my employment contract, resigned. My first thought was to call Virginia Tech and Arkansas to see if their offers were still on the table. Thank goodness there were no cell phones, faxes, or e-mail that day, or I might not be writing this today. It is difficult to describe the changes in the university, college, and the campus since 1971. However, I can tell you that they are all positive and, hopefully, will continue moving this university forward. The college has just scratched the surface of its potential.

Let me dwell on what has not changed about the university and the college. First, we continue to attract some of the best and brightest faculty from the best academic institutions in the country. We develop high-quality programs that are attracting some of the best students from across Florida, the United States, and the world. We are truly being driven by the faculty. Second, the students have not changed, except that we enroll and graduate more. They are still bright, intellectually curious, hard working, and challenging. Lastly, the core values of the institution are still in place and are continually strengthened.

To all of the alumni and friends, I wish you the best, and please come back and re-engage with your college. Please remember that your successes strengthen the value of your COBA degree and all of the degrees earned by the students who have and who will follow you.

My best,

Dean Bob Anderson
